JESSIE MATTHEWS Vintage photo, chin resting in her palm, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman Photograph inscribed and signed: “To Saul/Best Wishes/Jessie Matthews”. Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: October 23, 1941. Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hart wrote songs for her, including the latter’s hit My Heart Stood Still. She starred in both the stage and film versions of Evergreen , one of the first British musicals to be a big hit in the US. Her grace as a dancer earned the sobriquet ” the female Fred Astaire, ” efforts to pair them on screen ran afoul of studio rivalries. Her career was badly damaged by affairs and contentious divorces headlined in the tabloid press, but she made a comeback as a musical star of British radio in the 1950s. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. See additional material from these signers. NORMAN ROCKWELL Inscribed 11×14 photo on a 13×18 mount, showing Rockwell seated in a tweed jacket and bow tie at Colonial Williamsburg Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: To Karen Williams/sincerely/Norman/Rockwell/March 17’68/Williamsburg/Va. B/w, 11×14 image, 13×8 overall (two surfaces). Accompanied by 1968 newspaper article on Rockwell’s visit to Williamsburg. He painted over 300 covers for the “Saturday Evening Post” from 1916 to 1965 after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for “Boy’s Life”. His art, drawn with attention to detail, had an air of simplicity and sentimentality. Rockwell’s popularity grew because his art seemed to be, for everyday Americans, a mirror-image of real life. Rockwell’s work was also published in several other magazines and on numerous calendars, and his paintings portraying “The Four Freedoms” were distributed as morale-builders and to promote the sale of Victory Bonds during WWII. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. When this photo was taken, Rockwell was visiting historic Williamsburg to render a series of sketches for a new exhibition hall. Corners and edges creased and worn. THE DEEP MOVIE CAST Black and white still from the 1977 film signed by stars Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte, with Bisset adding “all the very best” to a fan Inscribed photograph signed: “To Mike/All the very best/Jacqueline/Bisset”, “Nick Nolte”, B/w 9¾x8. Originally cast in sexpot roles in films such as Casino Royale (1967), British actress JACQUELINE BISSET b. 1944 later developed into a top-notch actress, as evidenced by her performances in The Grasshopper (1969) and The Thief Who Came to Dinner (1972). She came to so despise her earlier sexpot image that she insisted that no still photos of her wet T-shirt scenes in The Deep (1977) be reproduced for publication. That year, Newsweek magazine voted her the most beautiful film actress of all time. In 1978, she played another famous Jackie in The Greek Tycoon, an à clef version of the Aristotle Onassis saga. A more mature but no less dazzlingly beautiful Bisset was later seen in a kinky secondary role in Zalman King’s Wild Orchid (1990). The actress received critical acclaim in 2001 for her portrayal of a dying woman’s search for the daughter she never knew in Christopher Munch’s drama The Sleepy Time Gal. With ruggedly handsome looks and a lengthy screen career, actor/producer NICK NOLTE b. 1941 has established himself as a major industry figure. He was 36 when he finally got his break in the acclaimed television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976) that earned him an Emmy nomination. He went on to star in such films as The Deep (1977), North Dallas Forty (1979), Heart Beat (1980), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) and The Prince of Tides (1991). He earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal as Sheriff Wade Whitehouse in Affliction (1997), for which he also acted as the film’s executive producer. Nolte further re-established his reputation as a major player with his role in The Thin Red Line (1998). See additional material from these signers. THE DEEP MOVIE CAST.
