Some of the highlights of his directorial efforts include Splash (1984), Cocoon (1985), Apollo 13 (1995), Ransom (1996), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2006) and A Beautiful Mind (2001 – Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and, of course, Best Director). THE MILLS BROTHERS B/w publicity photo of the Mills Brothers’ Herb, Harry and Donald, the band’s lineup from 1957 until Harry’s death in 1982, singing in tuxes and signed “With our sincere best wishes” by Herbert Mills Inscribed photograph signed To Laura – With our sincere best wishes. B/w, 10×8 overall, 9¼x6¾ image, one surface. Photo by Harry Miller Associates and International Creative Management. The band members are identified in this photo by Herbert as “Herb”, “Harry” and “Don”. This was the Mills Brothers’ lineup from 1957, after father John, Sr. Stopped touring, until the death of Harry in 1982. THE MILLS BROTHERS often had to include a note with their early recordings saying that the only instrument they had was a guitar. That’s because the vocal group was so adept at imitating the sounds of trumpets, trombones and saxophones (a gimmick they reportedly came up with when one of them forgot his kazoo at an amateur contest). Even after the gimmick grew old, the band managed to switch to mainstream pop, becoming one of the most enduring oldies acts, recording more than 2,000 albums with total sales of over 50 million and performing in some form from the late 1920s until the death of Herbert Mills in 1989. The group consisted of real-life brothers John, Jr. Their hits included the early 1930s hits Tiger Rag and Dinah, the 1943 ballad Paper Doll, 1952’s Glow Worm, a 1958 cover of the Silhouette’s Get a Job and 1968’s Cab Driver, their last hit.
