He presided over the build-up of the U. He also presided over the construction of the one-of a kind, super-secret NR-1 nuclear submarine. Despite cost overruns during its development, which earned the wrath of the General Accounting Office, the NR-1 fulfilled Rickover’s fondest hopes. The story of the craft has now been told in Dark Waters: An Insider’s Account of the NR-1, the Cold War’s Undercover Nuclear Submarine by Don Davis and original crewmember Lee Vyborny (2002). Rickover was promoted to rear admiral in 1953, vice-admiral in 1959 and admiral in 1973. Flyleaf is lightly discolored. Boards are lightly soiled with rounded corners. CLARENCE DARROW Black and white publicity photograph of Clarence Darrow wearing a suit and tie inscribed to Robert R. Book Photograph signed and inscribed: Clarence Darrow/To Robert R. B/w, 9¾x11½ overall, image 7½x9½ (one surface). Debs, President of the American Railroad Union, arrested on a federal contempt of court charge arising from a strike at the Chicago Pullman Palace Car Company. Although Darrow lost the case, he won a national reputation as a champion of radical causes. A brilliant orator and a master of reforming the law, framing pleas and eliciting evidence, he became one of America’s most renowned defense lawyers, and he used his position to campaign against capital punishment. In his sixties, Darrow successfully defended Leopold and Loeb (1924) in getting life imprisonment instead of death for kidnapping and killing a 13-year-old boy. In 1925, he defended John T. Scopes, accused of violating a Tennessee law by teaching evolution, in the “Scopes Monkey Trial”. Darrow’s autobiography, The Story of My Life, was published in 1932. He participated in the birth of the UN in San Francisco in 1945 as an advisor to the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Creased and torn right edge and lower right corner. Book inscribed and signed: “May 24, 1977/To Stephanie & Dominic -/With Black Sheep/One’s Blessings -/Always -/Pappy Boyington”, 384p, 6×8¾. Gregory Boyington, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Fresno: Wilson Press, 1958. Hardcover with dust jacket. Inscribed on half-title page. In 1941, he joined the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) during World War II in China. He formed his own squadron (VMF-214) in 1943, consisting of new and veteran pilots, based in the Solomon Islands. Some of the veterans had previously been reprimanded for disciplinary problems. On January 3, 1944, Boyington shot down three enemy aircraft before being shot down himself. He spent the next 20 months as a Prisoner of War. During this period he was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. Dust jacket slightly worn and frayed at top edge. Pinhead-sized spot on outer edge of pages.
