DAVID NIVEN The actor is shown posing for the camera in this 7½x8 black and white photograph Inscribed Photograph signed: ” For Warren/ Best wishes/ David Niven ” in black felt tip, b/w, 7½x8. After several strong supporting roles in the late 1930s, Niven had just had his first role as a leading man (opposite Ginger Rogers in 1939’s Bachelor Mother), when World War II broke out. He became the first, and one of the few, British actors to leave Hollywood to re-enlist. After the war, all his roles were starring ones. He notched a Golden Globe for The Moon is Blue (1953), and played Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days (1956). Moreover, he won the 1959 Academy Award for Best Actor for Separate Tables (1958). Although often cast in light comedies, such as the Pink Panther series (1964 and after), Niven could also play strong action roles, one of which being his performance in The Guns of Navarone (1961).
