Copy of Paid by Marvin Dana. Published by Grosset & Dunlap of New York. This book is a novelization of Paid (1930), one of several screen adaptations of Veiller’s play Within the Law. Joan Crawford had the female lead as Mary Turner, while William Bakewell appeared in the supporting cast as B. This movie was released nine years before Christine Crawford’s birth, so we’re pretty sure she didn’t appear in this movie. The film was hugely successful, and MGM soon doubled her salary and began featuring her name on marquees. Unlike so many stars of the period, Crawford successfully made the transformation from the silents to the sound era, although she preferred the silents. Crawford, originally a professional dancer, had made her film debut in 1925. She won a Best Actress Academy Award for Mildred Pierce (1945) and was nominated for Best Actress Oscars for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). A tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest (1978, later made into a feature film), by her daughter Christina, portrayed Crawford as unfeeling and ruthlessly ambitious. However, Crawford was a faithful correspondent with her large fan base. He played Tobias Norton in the popular Walt Disney Davy Crockett TV Western dramas of the 1950s. Actress CHRISTINE CRAWFORD, born in 1939, the adopted daughter of actress Joan Crawford, wrote about the abuse she suffered at the hands of the film star in her 1978 book, Mommie Dearest, which spent 42 weeks on the bestseller list and was made into a film in 1981. Dustcover is lightly scratched (not visible head-on), scuffed and creased and has light tears and cuts at top and bottom edge. Corners of cover and top and bottom edge of spine are rounded and worn. Originally cast in sexpot roles in films such as Casino Royale (1967), British actress JACQUELINE BISSET b. 1944 later developed into a top-notch actress, as evidenced by her performances in The Grasshopper (1969) and The Thief Who Came to Dinner (1972). She came to so despise her earlier sexpot image that she insisted that no still photos of her wet T-shirt scenes in The Deep (1977) be reproduced for publication. That year, Newsweek magazine voted her the most beautiful film actress of all time. In 1978, she played another famous Jackie in The Greek Tycoon, an à clef version of the Aristotle Onassis saga. A more mature but no less dazzlingly beautiful Bisset was later seen in a kinky secondary role in Zalman King’s Wild Orchid (1990). The actress received critical acclaim in 2001 for her portrayal of a dying woman’s search for the daughter she never knew in Christopher Munch’s drama The Sleepy Time Gal. With ruggedly handsome looks and a lengthy screen career, actor/producer NICK NOLTE b. 1941 has established himself as a major industry figure. He was 36 when he finally got his break in the acclaimed television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976) that earned him an Emmy nomination. He went on to star in such films as The Deep (1977), North Dallas Forty (1979), Heart Beat (1980), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) and The Prince of Tides (1991). He earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal as Sheriff Wade Whitehouse in Affliction (1997), for which he also acted as the film’s executive producer. This comedy from 20th Century-Fox starred Gaynor as a Princess who disguises herself as a manicurist and falls in love with a delicatessen worker (Garat), despite the efforts of the Prime Minister (Smith) to arrange her marriage to a Prince. Mundin played a detective. She won the first Academy Award for Best Actress (1927/1928) for her performances as Diane in Seventh Heaven , Angela in Street Angel and the wife in Sunrise (the early Oscars were often given for cumulative work). She was nominated for the 1938 Oscar for her role as Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester in A Star is Born. He made his London stage debut in 1895, his first film appearance in 1914.
