Copy of Paid by Marvin Dana. Published by Grosset & Dunlap of New York. This book is a novelization of Paid (1930), one of several screen adaptations of Veiller’s play Within the Law. Joan Crawford had the female lead as Mary Turner, while William Bakewell appeared in the supporting cast as B. This movie was released nine years before Christine Crawford’s birth, so we’re pretty sure she didn’t appear in this movie. The film was hugely successful, and MGM soon doubled her salary and began featuring her name on marquees. Unlike so many stars of the period, Crawford successfully made the transformation from the silents to the sound era, although she preferred the silents. Crawford, originally a professional dancer, had made her film debut in 1925. She won a Best Actress Academy Award for Mildred Pierce (1945) and was nominated for Best Actress Oscars for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). A tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest (1978, later made into a feature film), by her daughter Christina, portrayed Crawford as unfeeling and ruthlessly ambitious. However, Crawford was a faithful correspondent with her large fan base. He played Tobias Norton in the popular Walt Disney Davy Crockett TV Western dramas of the 1950s. Actress CHRISTINE CRAWFORD, born in 1939, the adopted daughter of actress Joan Crawford, wrote about the abuse she suffered at the hands of the film star in her 1978 book, Mommie Dearest, which spent 42 weeks on the bestseller list and was made into a film in 1981. Dustcover is lightly scratched (not visible head-on), scuffed and creased and has light tears and cuts at top and bottom edge. Corners of cover and top and bottom edge of spine are rounded and worn. STEPPENWOLF, which is named after a Herman Hesse novel, has released eight gold albums and three top 10 songs, including Born to Be Wild, which peaked at no. 2 in 1968, and Magic Carpet Ride, which peaked at no. 3 that same year. The band was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1967 out of the remnants of the Toronto, Canada-based rock band The Sparrows. The Sparrows included KAY, born Joachim Fritz Krauledat in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany in 1944, McJOHN, born John Raymond Goadsby in 1945, ST. NICHOLAS, born Klaus Karl Kassbaum, in Plön, Germany and MONARCH, born in 1950 in Los Angeles, California, although St. Nicholas left the band before it changed its name and didn’t return until 1969. Steppenwolf broke up twice, in 1972 and 1976, only to reform each time. Steppenwolf played its farewell concert in 2007, with Kay as the only founding member left in the band. Following their success in vaudeville, The Three Stooges appeared in several Broadway revues and in 1930, supported Ted Healy in the film Soup to Nuts. Shortly after, Shemp left the act and went out on his own with roles in many films including The Bank Dick with W. Fields, Buck Privates with Abbott and Costello and Helzapoppin with Olsen and Johnson. He was replaced by his younger brother, Curly Howard (Jerome Horowitz). In 1934, The Three Stooges began the longest-running series of two-reel comedies in the history of sound films, with over 200 produced by Columbia between 1934 and 1958. When Curly suffered a stroke in 1946, Shemp took his place. Shemp died in 1955 and was replaced by Joe Besser, who was replaced by Joe DeRita in 1959 when The Three Stooges ventured into feature films. Lightly creased (not visible head on). Originally cast in sexpot roles in films such as Casino Royale (1967), British actress JACQUELINE BISSET b. 1944 later developed into a top-notch actress, as evidenced by her performances in The Grasshopper (1969) and The Thief Who Came to Dinner (1972). She came to so despise her earlier sexpot image that she insisted that no still photos of her wet T-shirt scenes in The Deep (1977) be reproduced for publication. That year, Newsweek magazine voted her the most beautiful film actress of all time. In 1978, she played another famous Jackie in The Greek Tycoon, an à clef version of the Aristotle Onassis saga. A more mature but no less dazzlingly beautiful Bisset was later seen in a kinky secondary role in Zalman King’s Wild Orchid (1990). The actress received critical acclaim in 2001 for her portrayal of a dying woman’s search for the daughter she never knew in Christopher Munch’s drama The Sleepy Time Gal. With ruggedly handsome looks and a lengthy screen career, actor/producer NICK NOLTE b. 1941 has established himself as a major industry figure. He was 36 when he finally got his break in the acclaimed television miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (1976) that earned him an Emmy nomination. He went on to star in such films as The Deep (1977), North Dallas Forty (1979), Heart Beat (1980), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) and The Prince of Tides (1991). He earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal as Sheriff Wade Whitehouse in Affliction (1997), for which he also acted as the film’s executive producer. James Earl Jones stars as boxing great Jack Jefferson, who must deal with the racism and hatred of mid-century white America. Jefferson becomes the world’s first black heavyweight champion. He is also in love with a white woman named Eleanor (Jane Alexander), and is arrested for crossing the state line with her. After escaping from prison and on the run, Jefferson refuses to agree to a fixed fight in Cuba to regain his freedom. Eleanor commits suicide, their life on the run overwhelming her. Jack finally accepts the bout in Havana, fighting his opponent with everything he’s got. JAMES EARL JONES was originally a stage actor, winning Tony Awards for The Great White Hope (1969) and Fences (1987). He was nominated for an Oscar (1971) as Best Actor for reprising The Great White Hope on film. In 1991, he won both a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Emmy, for Gabriel’s Fire and Heat Wave. Jones’ sonorous and highly recognizable voice served both Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy (1975 and after) and Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King (1994). Stage, screen and television actress JANE ALEXANDER won a Tony Award for The Great White Hope (1969) and an Emmy Award for Playing for Time (1981).
