THE GREAT WHITE HOPE MOVIE CAST: JAMES EARL JONES and JANE ALEXANDER James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander sign a black and white publicity photograph from their film The Great White Hope. Photograph inscribed and signed: “to Bill/Love and peace/James Earl Jones” and “Warm/wishes, /Jane/Alexander”. B/w, 10×8 overall, image 6×4 (one surface). This 1970 film is an account of the trials and tribulations of boxer Jack Johnson, based on the play by Howard Sackler. James Earl Jones stars as boxing great Jack Jefferson, who must deal with the racism and hatred of mid-century white America. Jefferson becomes the world’s first black heavyweight champion. He is also in love with a white woman named Eleanor (Jane Alexander), and is arrested for crossing the state line with her. After escaping from prison and on the run, Jefferson refuses to agree to a fixed fight in Cuba to regain his freedom. Eleanor commits suicide, their life on the run overwhelming her. Jack finally accepts the bout in Havana, fighting his opponent with everything he’s got. JAMES EARL JONES was originally a stage actor, winning Tony Awards for The Great White Hope (1969) and Fences (1987). He was nominated for an Oscar (1971) as Best Actor for reprising The Great White Hope on film. In 1991, he won both a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Emmy, for Gabriel’s Fire and Heat Wave. Jones’ sonorous and highly recognizable voice served both Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy (1975 and after) and Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King (1994). Stage, screen and television actress JANE ALEXANDER won a Tony Award for The Great White Hope (1969) and an Emmy Award for Playing for Time (1981). She also was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress for The Great White Hope (1971) and Testament (1983) and nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscars for All The President’s Men and Kramer vs. Alexander also portrayed First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in two TV specials, Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: the White House Years (1977).
