Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: October 16, 1937. After military service, Loder took up acting and soon moved to the US. He played mostly supporting roles (How Green Was My Valley, 1941), but starred as the romantic lead in King Solomon’s Mines (1937). He was married to actress Hedy Lamarr from 1943 to 1947, one of several marriages for each. Their marriage is featured in the recent Irish play, Michael James Ford’s Hedy Lamarr and the Easter Rising (2006). LEW AYRES The actor poses in a suit and leans against a chair in this signed black and white photograph Inscribed photograph signed: “To La Verue -/ warmest greetings/ from Lew Ayres/ 1983/ Photo 1947″ in blue felt tip. A leading man through the 1940s, he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Johnny Belinda (1948). He starred as Dr. Kildare in a series of feature films, but refused to play the role on television because cigarettes were to be advertised on the program. Misidentified as a conscientious objector because of his desire to serve as a combat medic, Ayers was temporarily blacklisted in Hollywood during World War II. He remained active in movie and television character roles through the 1980s, but never achieved the same level of popularity he had in the period just before WWII. Credits Ayres earned later in his career include Lime Street (1985) alongside Robert Wagner and guest appearances on Little House on the Prairie and Knots Landing (both in 1982). Photograph is on paper and measures 11″ x 14″ resting in black-painted wood frame.
