Her career was threatened by tabloid scandals in the 1930s, including a very contentious divorce, but she moved on to even greater film success in the talking era. She won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying chain-smoking concert pianist Sandra Kovak in Warner Bros. The Great Lie , which starred Bette Davis. That same year, she costarred with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. She wrote five novels; her autobiography and subsequent film memoir were both best sellers. MARY PICKFORD Vintage photo in dance apparel inscribed by her in 1929 as Aunt Mary. ” Photograph inscribed and signed: ” To my sweet Burrly/with my love/Aunt Mary/1929. Her salary was doubled periodically. She was also to share the profits in Zukor’s studio. Pickford was the first superstar of the movies. In 1919, Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, D. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks formed United Artists to distribute their films. In 1920, Pickford and Fairbanks were married. They separated in 1933, which coincided with Pickford retiring from the movies. Pickford and Fairbanks were divorced in January 1936. Later in 1936, she became First Vice President of United Artists and, in 1937, established the Mary Pickford Cosmetics Company. That same year, she married former co-star Charles “Buddy” Rogers. Lightly creased, touching the “M” of Mary. Pickford had a sister and brother, Fairbanks a brother (all in show business); more research would be required to identify the niece or nephew to whom this photo was inscribed.
