Ernest Hemingway Signed Photograph – Authentic – Iconic Bullfight Association. Beginning as a journalist, Hemingway became the author of fictional and somewhat autobiographical classics such THE SUN ALSO RISES, A FAREWELL TO ARMS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, etc. Hemingway’s 1932 non-fiction work DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON was an immediate bestseller and chronicled the ceremony and traditions of Spanish bullfighting. He would remain an aficionado of bullfighting throughout his life and this photograph captures him engaging as a spectator of the sport…. Captured here attending a bullfight in Madrid during “The Dangerous Summer”. In 1959 Hemingway made a sentimental visit to Spain, the country he said he loved more than any other except his own. His purpose was not only to enjoy himself but to gather material for an article Life Magazine had asked him to write about bullfighting. He followed fighters at a hectic pace from arena to arena around Spain and became so absorbed in the high drama of the experience that when he came to write about it, he ended by producing not the article Life had commissioned but a book-length manuscript of 120,000 words. Here he inscribes and signs an image from that Summer in a warm way in bold black steel-tip fountain pen ink…. “To Arnie with Love Ernest”. The handwriting, accomplished during the time that Hemingway was showing symptoms of a mental breakdown and just before his suicide, is perfectly placed on the photo. Canito was a Spanish Madrid-based photojournalist who specialized in torero photography and photographed Hemingway several times. The photographer would later report that following and photographing Hemingway in various Spanish cities during “The Dangerous Summer” he was witness to and shared in “feasts and binges” led by Papa. This is a first generation photograph hand developed by the photographer. Condition: The silver gelatin black and white photograph measures 9.5″ x 7″. Very Good condition with professional restoration of an area of slight surface scuffing and mild discoloration in the background along the top edge and the top right corner. The restoration work minimally detracts from the overall appearance. The photo, with complete borders, has been professionally paper-backed for stability. Hemingway is extremely scarce in authentically signed photographs. This photograph of him attending a bullfight in the year before his death by suicide is one that captures the author in a great association with his literary work.
