Signed First Day Cover. Signed “Rosa Parks” in black ink. An Artcraft FIRST DAY COVER postmarked Sep 30, 1977 from York, Pennsylvania in FINE condition. The family later moved to Pine Level, Alabama, where Rosa grew up attending rural schools. When Rosa completed her education at Pine Level at age 11, her mother enrolled her in Montgomery Industrial School for Girls. From there Rosa went on the Alabama State Teacher’s College High School, although her grandmother’s illness and subsequent death prevented her from graduating with the rest of her class. Rosa married Raymond Parks in 1932. Raymond supported Rosa’s desire to complete her formal education, and she went on to receive her high school diploma in 1934. The couple worked together in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) programs. Rosa became a secretary and later a youth leader of the local branch of the NAACP; she was preparing for a major youth conference at the time of her arrest. The incident in Montgomery transformed Rosa Parks into a national figure and a major role model as well. She went on to work for U. John Conyers of Michigan. After Raymond’s death, she co-founded the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development. She also co-authored four books-“Rosa Parks: My Story” (with Jim Haskins), “Quiet Strength” with Gregory J. Parks: A Dialogue with Today’s Youth with Gregory J. Hundreds of American institutions paid tribute to this remarkable woman during her lifetime: Mrs. Parks received a number of honorary doctoral degrees, countless plaques, awards and citations, and keys to several cities. Among her honors were the NAACP’s Springarn Medal, the UAW’s Social Justice Award, the Martin Luther King Jr. Non-Violent Peace Prize, the Roger Joseph Prize from Hebrew Union College, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Additional photographs of Rosa Parks shown in the listing are for display purposes only and not included as part of the sale. This is one of the Best guarantees anywhere!

WARTIME DOCUMENT SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN. A Clear, Distinct Vellum Document Signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Wartime Document on Vellum; Signed by President Abraham Lincoln Feb. This beautiful and clear document records t. He commission of George Randolph Dyer, a Lincoln protégé and delegate to the state convention at Decatur, Illinois that nominated Mr. Lincoln on his first nomination for the Presidency. At the time of the Decatur Convention George Randolph Dyer was serving as the elected sheriff of Will County, Illinois, having moved from Chicago in 1841. He became a fervent abolitionist active in the underground railroad during the tumultuous 1850s before embracing Lincolns political aspirations. With established credentials, George Dyer (along with his brother, Charles) was slated among the delegates to the State Nominating Convention. Lincoln counted George and Charles Dyer among his legion of friends and that connection went back to at least the early 1850s. A report written by the Chairman of the Village of Plainfield Ill. Historic Preservation Commission in 2009 states: It is highly likely that he (Lincoln) did visit Plainfield on more than one occasion due to his close friendship with the members of the Dyer family of rural Plainfield. The old Dyer farmhouse still stood in 1998 and Lincoln may have been entertainedand quite possibly even slept in the house, according to an authority on local history and the Dyer family. A memorial for George Randolph Dyer published in October 1895 noted he was one of the first and most prominent members of the Republican party of Illinois, and so became a close friend of Lincoln, Lovejoy, Wentworth, and other leaders of the party in the state. The History of the Kimball Family (related by marriage) published in 1897 is laced with platitudes to George Dyer stating that He was one of the first and most active members of the Republican party, and although nearly alone, true to his freeborn instincts, he educated his neighbors to agree perfectly with Lincoln and Lovejoy, his personal friends, who he adorned, that slavery must be held in check at all hazards and at all costs, and must eventually be abolished. Another passage from Kimball reaffirms that, Lincoln, Lovejoy, and Long John Wentworth were his intimate friends, and it is said that he has about as many stories to tell as were told by Lincoln. During the Civil War, President Lincoln availed himself of the Dyers service. In 1862, George R. Dyer quickly secured a presidential appointment; his commission with the rank of Captain, offered here, being signed in Lincolns hand.
