He played many other youthful parts, including the mayor of Boys’ Town (1940), before patrolling the Atlantic as a Coast Guard officer in World War II. From 1950 to 1955, Thomas starred as Tom Corbett, Space Cadet , beating out Jack Lemmon for the role. Thereafter he left acting to turn his hobbies into professions: writing books about bridge and novels featuring Sherlock Holmes. In the 1990s, Thomas was a hit at fan convention, wearing his old space cadet uniform, which still fit him. Photograph inscribed and signed: “Lyndon Johnson”, “To Melvin Carter, with our deep appreciation -/Lady Bird Johnson”. Color, 14×11 overall, image 11½x8 (one surface).
