Wartime service stalled his career. His last feature film was All Ashore (with Rooney and Dick Haymes, 1943), described by one critic as a poor man’s On the Town. Appearances on TV variety shows, including Ed Sullivan, seemed to promise a fresh start, but he choked to death on food in a New York hotel room at age 37. FRANKIE THOMAS Shown as the child star of Wednesday’s Child, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. Photograph inscribed and signed: “To Saul/From/Frankie Thomas”. Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: November 14, 1934. Wednesday’s Child (1934) had the longest stage part ever given to a child actor. When Wednesday’s Child was filmed, Thomas went to Hollywood to star in it, with his parents playing character roles. He played many other youthful parts, including the mayor of Boys’ Town (1940), before patrolling the Atlantic as a Coast Guard officer in World War II. From 1950 to 1955, Thomas starred as Tom Corbett, Space Cadet , beating out Jack Lemmon for the role. Thereafter he left acting to turn his hobbies into professions: writing books about bridge and novels featuring Sherlock Holmes. In the 1990s, Thomas was a hit at fan convention, wearing his old space cadet uniform, which still fit him. LYNDON JOHNSON and LADY BIRD JOHNSON The President signs, the First Lady inscribes and signs, a 14×11 color photo of the Presidential couple hosting Australia’s Prime Minister at the White House. Photograph inscribed and signed: “Lyndon Johnson”, “To Melvin Carter, with our deep appreciation -/Lady Bird Johnson”. Color, 14×11 overall, image 11½x8 (one surface). Shown with Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt and Mrs. Holt, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Muriel Humphrey. Featured entertainers at the state dinner are shown on the stage behind them. The Johnsons had two daughters, Lynda Bird and Luci Baines. Johnson died on July 11, 2007 at age 94, she had lived longer than any other First Lady except Bess Truman, who died at 97. Prime Minister Holt, a strong supporter of the Vietnam War, visited Washington in July 1966. He had just increased the Australian troop presence in Vietnam, and gave speeches in Washington praising President Johnson and his policies, one speech ending with the phrase, all the way with LBJ. The red-nosed, gravel-voiced, bottle-hitting American comedian began his career in silents, later excelling in such films as David Copperfield (as Micawber), My Little Chickadee (with Mae West) and The Bank Dick. The vaudeville veteran, who appeared in every version of the “Ziegfeld Follies” from 1915 to 1921, made his last film Sensations of 1945, in 1944.
