A former Broadway dancer, Wilson made her film debut in the 1934 Laurel & Hardy film, Babes in Toyland, before signing a contract with Warner Bros. And appearing as the scatterbrained “dumb blonde” in scores of comedies, including Satan Met a Lady (1936) and Boy Meets Girl (1938). Her other films include China Clipper (1936), She’s In the Army (1942), Shine On Harvest Moon (1944), A Girl in Every Port (1952) and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962). In 1944, Wilson was hired to perform a comedy striptease in Ken Murray’s Hollywood stage revue, Blackouts. She performed her act in 2,332 performances over the next five years, and Wilson would return to the stage when her film career waned. She also appeared in nightclubs and made guest appearances on a number of TV series, including Where’s Huddles (1970, voice) and Love, American Style (1972). McDowall’s first adult acting assignment was as Malcolm in Orson Welles’ 1948 film version of Macbeth. The actor spent the better part of the early 1960s playing Octavian in the mammoth production Cleopatra, co-starring with longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor. An accomplished photographer, McDowall was honored by having his photos of Taylor and other celebrities frequently published in the leading magazines of the era. McDowall’s most frequent assignments between 1968 and 1975 found him in elaborate simian makeup in the Planet of the Apes theatrical films and TV series. Shortly before his death, the Academy of Motion Pictures named its photo archive after him. Wartime service stalled his career. His last feature film was All Ashore (with Rooney and Dick Haymes, 1943), described by one critic as a poor man’s On the Town. Appearances on TV variety shows, including Ed Sullivan, seemed to promise a fresh start, but he choked to death on food in a New York hotel room at age 37. Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: July 31, 1941. She was married to MGM producer Irving Thalberg until his early death (1936). Shearer turned down the starring role in Mrs. Miniver, and, by some accounts, did the same for the part of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind. She retired from films after 1942. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Slight bend to upper right corner. HARDIE ALBRIGHT Vintage photo in pinstripe suit, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. Photograph inscribed and signed: “To/Saul/Best wishes/Hardie Albright”. Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: February 15, 1935. On stage from childhood in his parents’ vaudeville act, Hardie Albright b. He got a few starring roles, notably as Arthur Dimmesdale in The Scarlet Letter (1935). He was the voice of the young Bambi in the Disney film (1942). He appeared in a dozen Broadway plays, Shakespearean roles included, between 1926 and 1938. He made multiple appearances in both sitcoms (Leave It to Beaver, Dennis the Menace, Hazel) and dramas (Perry Mason, Rawhide, Gunsmoke). He was the UN Secretary General in the Twilight Zone classic To Serve Man (1962).
