Receiving his education at St. Johns School and Friends School in Philadelphia, Gaskill was a pianist for the Philadelphia theatre at age 16. 5 years later he established his own musical publishing firm which he operated until he was deployed in World War I (he earned a Purple Heart). Following the war, he toured in vaudeville as Melody Monarch, and later joined the ASCAP in 1921. A prolific and popular composer, his chief musical collaborators included Jimmy McHugh, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington. His popular song, “I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me” has been featured in nearly a dozen films, as well as his other songs “Minnie the Moocher” and Prisoner of Love.
