Make an Offer Today and Get a Quick Response! Take a Look at This Week’s Specials! BABE “THE SULTAN OF SWAT” RUTH – AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH – HFSID 288356. BABE RUTH 3½x5½ photograph, shown in the outfield wearing his Yankee uniform; circa 1933! Photograph inscribed and signed: “To/Harold Myers/Sincerely/Babe Ruth”. Ink notation (unknown hand) on seperate cardstock: Taken at St. Louis June 24, 1933. While his record for career home runs (714) has been surpassed by Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds, and his single season mark of 60 by four players, many other records stand unchallenged. One of the new statistics devised to measure baseball value perhaps says it best: Wins Above Replacement (WAR). How many more games did his team win by having the Babe on its roster instead of a replacement-level player? Over his career, his teams won 190 more games with him than they would have won in his absence, and he had the American League’s best WAR in 12 seasons: two with the Boston Red Sox (1916, 1919), and 10 with the New York Yankees between 1920 and 1931. His other annual stats follow the same pattern: continuing leadership in on base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored and runs batted in. While not a speedy fielder in his later years, he boasted a shotgun arm. Although his final season with the Boston Braves (1935) was an anti-climax, he led the Boston Red Sox to two World Championships and the New York Yankees to five more. His trade from Boston to New York heralded the Yankees’ emergence as baseball’s greatest dynasty. To add to his value, Ruth was a first-rate pitcher for six seasons before his even greater value as an everyday hitter was realized. Here’s a trivia question: What pitcher has the best career won-lost record against the Yankees? He entered the Hall of Fame in 1936 , the first year of his retirement. More than six decades after his death, Ruth remains a larger than life figure, in America and abroad, remembered as “the Sultan of Swat” or simply the Bambino. Accompanied by PSA/DNA LOA. Ernest Hemingway Signed Photograph – Authentic – Iconic Bullfight Association. Beginning as a journalist, Hemingway became the author of fictional and somewhat autobiographical classics such THE SUN ALSO RISES, A FAREWELL TO ARMS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, etc. Hemingway’s 1932 non-fiction work DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON was an immediate bestseller and chronicled the ceremony and traditions of Spanish bullfighting. He would remain an aficionado of bullfighting throughout his life and this photograph captures him engaging as a spectator of the sport…. Captured here attending a bullfight in Madrid during “The Dangerous Summer”. In 1959 Hemingway made a sentimental visit to Spain, the country he said he loved more than any other except his own. His purpose was not only to enjoy himself but to gather material for an article Life Magazine had asked him to write about bullfighting. He followed fighters at a hectic pace from arena to arena around Spain and became so absorbed in the high drama of the experience that when he came to write about it, he ended by producing not the article Life had commissioned but a book-length manuscript of 120,000 words. Here he inscribes and signs an image from that Summer in a warm way in bold black steel-tip fountain pen ink…. “To Arnie with Love Ernest”. The handwriting, accomplished during the time that Hemingway was showing symptoms of a mental breakdown and just before his suicide, is perfectly placed on the photo. Canito was a Spanish Madrid-based photojournalist who specialized in torero photography and photographed Hemingway several times. The photographer would later report that following and photographing Hemingway in various Spanish cities during “The Dangerous Summer” he was witness to and shared in “feasts and binges” led by Papa. This is a first generation photograph hand developed by the photographer. Condition: The silver gelatin black and white photograph measures 9.5″ x 7″. Very Good condition with professional restoration of an area of slight surface scuffing and mild discoloration in the background along the top edge and the top right corner. The restoration work minimally detracts from the overall appearance. The photo, with complete borders, has been professionally paper-backed for stability. Hemingway is extremely scarce in authentically signed photographs. This photograph of him attending a bullfight in the year before his death by suicide is one that captures the author in a great association with his literary work.
