NORMAN ROCKWELL Inscribed 11×14 photo on a 13×18 mount, showing Rockwell seated in a tweed jacket and bow tie at Colonial Williamsburg Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: To Karen Williams/sincerely/Norman/Rockwell/March 17’68/Williamsburg/Va. B/w, 11×14 image, 13×8 overall (two surfaces). Accompanied by 1968 newspaper article on Rockwell’s visit to Williamsburg. He painted over 300 covers for the “Saturday Evening Post” from 1916 to 1965 after beginning his career at age 18 as an illustrator for “Boy’s Life”. His art, drawn with attention to detail, had an air of simplicity and sentimentality. Rockwell’s popularity grew because his art seemed to be, for everyday Americans, a mirror-image of real life. Rockwell’s work was also published in several other magazines and on numerous calendars, and his paintings portraying “The Four Freedoms” were distributed as morale-builders and to promote the sale of Victory Bonds during WWII. Rockwell published his autobiography, Norman Rockwell, My Adventures as an Illustrator, in 1960. When this photo was taken, Rockwell was visiting historic Williamsburg to render a series of sketches for a new exhibition hall. Corners and edges creased and worn. Multiple unknown stains around edges. See additional material from these signers. See 1,622 other listings in these categories. Please note that this is an authentically signed item. Norman Rockwell (1894 – 1978) was an American painter and illustrator. His works have a broad popular appeal in the United States for their reflection of American culture. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life he created for The Saturday Evening Post magazine over nearly five decades. Among the best-known of Rockwell’s works are the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter, The Problem We All Live With, Saying Grace, and the Four Freedoms series. Rockwell was a prolific artist, producing more than 4,000 original works in his lifetime. Most of his surviving works are in public collections. Rockwell was also commissioned to illustrate more than 40 books, including Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He painted portraits of Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, as well as those of foreign figures, including Gamal Abdel Nasser and Jawaharlal Nehru. One example of his more serious work is The Problem We All Live With, which dealt with the issue of school racial integration. The painting depicts a young black girl, Ruby Bridges, flanked by white federal marshals, walking to school past a wall defaced by racist graffiti. This 1964 painting was displayed in the White House when Bridges met with President Barack Obama in 2011. Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years. For now and into the foreseeable future, we will be listing rare paper items from his estate.
