WALTER KENT Four measures or music and lyrics from the 1943 hit I’ll Be Home for Christmas , written and signed on a 1975 Christmas-themed first day cover by Oscar-winning composer Walter Kent Inscribed autograph musical quotation signed: “To David Henderson/Walter Kent”, 6½x3½. He has handwritten four measures of music above his handwritten lyrics, “I’ll be home for Christmas”. Written on a first day cover for the 1975 Merry Christmas U. Stamp (no denomination), postmarked Washington, D. October 14, 1975, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Kent wrote the music for both, with lyrics provided by Nat Burton (for “Dover”) and James “Kim” Gannon for Christmas. I’ll Be Home for Christmas , a big hit for Bing Crosby in 1943 and a sentimental favorite covered by dozens of artists since, was the most requested song at USO Christmas shows all around the world. Kent also shared two Oscar nominations for Best Music, Original Song with Gannon (Too Much in Love from 1944’s Song of the Open Road and Endlessly from 1945’s Earl Carroll Vanities).
