JOSEPH MAZZINI: His Life, Writings, and Political Priniciples. Famous American abolitionist and newpaperman William Lloyd Garrison provided a 26-page introduction to this 1872 book of writings by the Italian politician/journalist/activist — a good friend of Garrison’s who had passed away earlier in the year. This is one of only three books containing Garrison’s writing to be published in his lifetime. This first edition copy is signed and inscribed by Garrison on the second page, dated January 1st, 1874. The congratulatory inscription is to his neighbor, Samuel C. Cobb, who had recently been elected mayor of Boston, an office he would hold for three consecutive terms. The book is well-preserved for its many years. An uncommon first, but of course the primary value is in the extremely rare inscription. Letters by William Lloyd Garrision are not too uncommon, but this is the only inscribed book by him currently available online. The book measures 5.25″ X 7.5″, xxxii + 366 pages. The photo of Garrision does not appear in the book. Ships promptly & securely.
