She was brought to California at age three by her mother, after her parent’s divorce, along with her younger sister, actress Joan Fontaine. While a freshman in college (1933) she appeared in a local production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and was chosen by Max Reinhardt to play Hermia in both his stage and screen versions of the play. She was then signed by Warner’s to a seven-year contract and went on to play delicate, sweetly appealing heroines in films dominated by the personality of some of the studio’s top male stars. In 1946 she won an Oscar for “To Each His Own” and again in 1949 for “The Heiress”. She is best known for her role as “Melanie” in the 1939 movie “Gone With the Wind” and her other films include: “The Snake Pit”, “Hold Back the Dawn”, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and more.
