Her poetry, which was first published in 1945, later focused on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg. Brooks had married poet and writer Henry Blakely in 1939, to whom she was wed until his death in 1996.
