The character Kojak and Savalas himself were smokers, but Savalas started to quit after cigarette commercials were banned in 1971. As Savalas quit smoking, so did his character. In a December episode of the show, Kojak exchanged his cigarette for a Tootsie Pop lollipop. Before his Kojak role, Savalas could be seen in various guest appearances and films. Most notably, he appeared in Kelly’s Heroes (1970) and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). His numerous awards include two Golden Globes (six nominations) and an Emmy Award (three nominations).
