Major Reginald John Howard DSO (1912 -1999) was a British Army officer who led a glider-borne assault that captured the Caen canal and Orne river bridges on 6 June 1944, as part of the D-Day landings during the Second World War. These bridges spanned the Caen Canal and the adjacent River Orne (about 500 yards to the east), and were vitally important to the success of the D-Day landings. Since the war the bridge over the canal has become known as “Pegasus Bridge”, as a tribute to the men who captured it. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. He was a longtime professor of history at the University of New Orleans and the author of many bestselling volumes of American popular history. This listing is for an AUTOGRAPHED 1ST EDITION COPY of Christopher Hitchens’ God Is Not Great – How Religion Poisons Everything. Signed by the author himself! The signature is inscribed to prominent feminist activist and author of The Passionate Heart. Zoe Nicholson on 5/6/2007, a mere 5 days after the book’s release. A truly rare and unique one-of-a-kind collector’s item, this book has been dutifully cared for over the years and remains in excellent, like new condition, with the clear dust jacket showing only light normal wear. Smoke-free home, adult/passionate collector owned. Please see photos for full details! If you require more photos or have any further questions, please feel to ask! Hitchens takes on his biggest subject yet – the increasingly dangerous role of religion in the world. With insight and wit, he describes the ways in which religion is man-made, immoral, and repressive and argues for a new enlightenment through science and reason. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope’s awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.
