B/w, 8×10 overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one surface). Publicity photograph for “Personal Management/Jose Granson” (Hood had married Granson in 1957). Name imprinted at lower margin. After starring as Darla until 1941, Hood attempted to launch a solo career, but found her biggest success as a singer in a vocal group, Darla Hood and the Enchanters, which provided background music for films, including 1949’s A Letter to Three Wives. The group was organized by Jose E. Granson, who would become her manager and husband. Hood appeared in only a few feature films, including Born to Sing (1942), Calypso Heat Wave (1957) and The Bat (1959), but she was heard on Merv Griffin’s radio program and on numerous radio and TV commercials, including the voice of the Mermaid on the Chicken of the Sea commercials. She made her last public appearance at a convention in Chicago before dying of acute hepatitis at a North Hollywood hospital following a relatively minor operation. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners, grease pencil marks at mid-left and right blank margins. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on) at background. McDowall’s first adult acting assignment was as Malcolm in Orson Welles’ 1948 film version of Macbeth. The actor spent the better part of the early 1960s playing Octavian in the mammoth production Cleopatra, co-starring with longtime friend Elizabeth Taylor. An accomplished photographer, McDowall was honored by having his photos of Taylor and other celebrities frequently published in the leading magazines of the era. McDowall’s most frequent assignments between 1968 and 1975 found him in elaborate simian makeup in the Planet of the Apes theatrical films and TV series. Shortly before his death, the Academy of Motion Pictures named its photo archive after him. Reed played supporting roles in a number of minor films, then in the mid’40s she began getting leads; with rare exceptions, she portrayed sincere, wholesome types and loving wives and girlfriends. She went against type playing a prostitute in From Here to Eternity (1953), for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Rarely getting rewarding roles, she retired from the screen in 1958 to star in the TV series The Donna Reed Show, which was a great success and remained on the air through 1966. After 1960 she appeared in only one more film. 2 pinhead-sized marks, one at chin and one at blank background. Defects from original negative have reproduced at background.
