DARLA HOOD Black and white publicity photograph of an older Darla wearing a sequined gown Photograph inscribed and signed: Thanks, Jess -/for your interest in/’Our Gang’! /All the best to/you in your endeavors. B/w, 8×10 overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one surface). Publicity photograph for “Personal Management/Jose Granson” (Hood had married Granson in 1957). Name imprinted at lower margin. After starring as Darla until 1941, Hood attempted to launch a solo career, but found her biggest success as a singer in a vocal group, Darla Hood and the Enchanters, which provided background music for films, including 1949’s A Letter to Three Wives. The group was organized by Jose E. Granson, who would become her manager and husband. Hood appeared in only a few feature films, including Born to Sing (1942), Calypso Heat Wave (1957) and The Bat (1959), but she was heard on Merv Griffin’s radio program and on numerous radio and TV commercials, including the voice of the Mermaid on the Chicken of the Sea commercials. She made her last public appearance at a convention in Chicago before dying of acute hepatitis at a North Hollywood hospital following a relatively minor operation. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners, grease pencil marks at mid-left and right blank margins. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on) at background. Two lines of management address crossed off in blue ink, red ink notes (unknown hand) and collector’s label on verso (no show through). See more material from these signers.
