Still, it was only after removing his expensive false teeth and trading his fancy duds for a dusty hobo’s outfit that the actor won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the cackling old prospector Howard in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), directed by his son, John Huston. Continuing to act into the 1970s, she turned her directing skills almost exclusively to television productions such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, Have Gun Will Travel, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir , The Untouchables, The Fugitive and Bewitched. In all, she appeared in some fifty-nine films, directed eight, appeared in fifty-eight television shows and directed fifty others, earning her two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After 1940, when he moved to Hollywood and became a US citizen, Henreid began to get starring roles. These included Now Voyager (1942) and Of Human Bondage (1946), but his most famous role was that of resistance leader Viktor Lazslo, Humphrey Bogart’s rival for the affections of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942). Henreid could also swashbuckle, as in Buccaneers (1950). From the 1950s onward, Henreid focused on directing films (Dead Ringer, 1964) and TV episodes (Alfred Hitchcock Presents). Devotion , completed in 1943 but not released until 1945, is praised for its acting performances but panned for playing fast and loose with history. Henreid played Reverend Arthur Nicholls, the object of a romantic rivalry between Emily Bronte (Lupino) and her sister Charlotte (played by Olivia de Haviland). Henreid’s memoir details the intense feuding on the set between Lupino and de Haviland. Alternate endings were even shot, with each sister winning him. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. PAULETTE GODDARD B/w photograph of Goddard from the chest up, reclining and in a shoulderless dress, signed “Good Wishes” in 1951 Inscribed photograph signed “To Ken/Good Wishes/Paulette Goddard/1951″. 7¾x9¾ overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface. A former teen Broadway chorus girl, she first attracted attention when she was featured reclining on a prop crescent moon in the 1928 Ziegfeld musical, Rio Rita. Goddard reportedly made several two-reel comedies for Hal Roach (in a blond wig) before being featured as a “Goldwyn Girl” in Eddie Cantor’s film, Kid from Spain, in 1932. She shot to stardom when she was cast by Charlie Chaplin in his 1936 film, Modern Times. Goddard also won Chaplin’s heart as well as the role, but there were questions as to whether the two were ever legally married, and her relationship with Chaplin cost her the one role that she truly coveted: Scarlett O’Hara in the 1939 epic, Gone With the Wind. Goddard, who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for So Proudly We Hail (1943), also appeared in such films as The Great Dictator (1940) and Reap the Wild Wind (1942) before making her final film, the French/Italian movie Gli Indifferenti (Time of Indifference), in 1964. She was coaxed out of retirement for a made-for-TV movie, The Snoop Sisters, in 1972. Lightly toned and creased. Corners have been torn off and rounded. Otherwise in fine condition.
