WALTER KENT Four measures or music and lyrics from the 1943 hit I’ll Be Home for Christmas , written and signed on a 1975 Christmas-themed first day cover by Oscar-winning composer Walter Kent Inscribed autograph musical quotation signed: “To David Henderson/Walter Kent”, 6½x3½. He has handwritten four measures of music above his handwritten lyrics, “I’ll be home for Christmas”. Written on a first day cover for the 1975 Merry Christmas U. Stamp (no denomination), postmarked Washington, D. October 14, 1975, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Kent wrote the music for both, with lyrics provided by Nat Burton (for “Dover”) and James “Kim” Gannon for Christmas. I’ll Be Home for Christmas , a big hit for Bing Crosby in 1943 and a sentimental favorite covered by dozens of artists since, was the most requested song at USO Christmas shows all around the world. Kent also shared two Oscar nominations for Best Music, Original Song with Gannon (Too Much in Love from 1944’s Song of the Open Road and Endlessly from 1945’s Earl Carroll Vanities). Autograph Musical Quotation inscribed and signed: To Wes Baleria/with best wishes/Gregor Piatigorsky/ 1949. Beneath his signature, Piatigorsky has drawn several musical notes. In 1949, Piatigorsky was finishing up his tenure as head of the cello department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. When he was not allowed to travel abroad to further his studies, Piatigorsky escaped to Poland and later studied briefly in Berlin and Leipzig before becoming the principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic. He made his U. Debut in 1929, playing with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowsi and the New York Philharmonic under Willem Mengelberg. Piatigorsky, who recorded and toured extensively with Arthur Rubinstein and Jascha Heifetz, also enjoyed a successful solo career, bringing the cello to the forefront as a solo instrument. To help to make the cello as facile and expressive as the violin, he transcribed, arranged, composed and commissioned works for the instrument. Piatigorsky moved to America in 1939 and became a U. Autograph Musical Quotation signed: Andante /[9 measures of music in both treble and bass clefs] / inscription in German, translated: for kind remembrance to Mr. Leschetizky/Paris 1864″, and on verso “Allegretto/ [16 measures of music for two instruments]/ Paris March 22 1864, 9½x6½. By age 18 he was a well-known virtuoso based in Vienna. He taught in Russia from 1862 to 1877, co-founding the St Petersburg Conservatory. He composed over 100 piano pieces, 2 operas, a piano concerto and 13 songs. In 1906 he made a dozen piano roll recordings, including 7 of his own compositions. His motto was, No art without life, no life without art. Encouraged by Chopin, he toured Europe to great acclaim. As a composer, Schulhoff is known for his piano solos, including a grand sonata, a 12 études, and various caprices, waltzes and mazurkas. Ink lightly bled through to verso. IGNACY JAN PADEREWSKI The composer pens four measures of one of his piano compositions, inscribing and dating it 1892 Inscribed Autograph Musical Quotation signed: Dr. Kimball/in kind remembrance/I J Paderewski, 7½x5 sheet (likely a letterhead) affixed to another sheet of the same size. Above his inscription and signature, Paderewski has written four bars of music, which he has titled: “Legende op 16″. To the left of his signature, Paderewski has written: Chicago/2 Jan. He wrote the piano piece Legende Op. 16 in 1888, and his other works include Minuet in G and the opera, Manru. The virtuoso pianist was also a philanthropist and Polish patriot. Paderewski interrupted his concert career in 1919 to serve as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and in 1940 to serve as President of the Polish Parliament in exile in Paris. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the “Pa” of Paderewski. Light stains at blank areas.
