Between the child star and the noted directed was an intervening period as a teen actor, including starring roles in American Graffiti (1973) and the long-running TV series Happy Days. He directs well crafted films aimed at mainstream audiences, and he enjoys a reputation as one of the most versatile and gifted directors of his generation. Some of the highlights of his directorial efforts include Splash (1984), Cocoon (1985), Apollo 13 (1995), Ransom (1996), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2006) and A Beautiful Mind (2001 – Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Screenplay and, of course, Best Director).
