Her career was threatened by tabloid scandals in the 1930s, including a very contentious divorce, but she moved on to even greater film success in the talking era. She won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying chain-smoking concert pianist Sandra Kovak in Warner Bros. The Great Lie , which starred Bette Davis. That same year, she costarred with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. She wrote five novels; her autobiography and subsequent film memoir were both best sellers. SCHULZ He inscribes his book Around the World in 45 Years, to a fan Inscribed Book Signed: For Jim -/Every best wish, / Charles M. /Schulz on the first flyleaf, 196p, 8½x10¾, soft cover. His book, Around the World in 45 Years, Andrews & McMeel, Kansas City: 1996. Subtitled: “Charlie Brown’s Anniversary Celebration”. It debuted as a panel strip on October 2, 1950 as “Peanuts”, a name Schulz disliked. Each strip was personally drawn, written, inked and lettered by “Sparky” Schulz, who created the strips in his office at One Snoopy Place and drank coffee at the Warm Puppy snack Bar. He died on February 12, 2000, the evening before his last “Peanuts” strip appeared in the Sunday editions of newspapers. Before Schulz’s death, the strip was reproduced in a number of popular books, and his loveable characters were also seen on television and in feature films as well as on a wide variety of licensed “Peanuts” products. Schulz’ award-winning work – he was Cartoonist of the Year in 1955 and again in 1965 – is still syndicated as “Classic Peanuts”. JOHN LODER Black and white photo of Loder wearing a suit holding a cigarette, Inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman Inscribed photograph signed: “To Saul/ with best wishes/John Loder,’37”. Collector’s ink stamp on verso dates signature: October 16, 1937. After military service, Loder took up acting and soon moved to the US. He played mostly supporting roles (How Green Was My Valley, 1941), but starred as the romantic lead in King Solomon’s Mines (1937). He was married to actress Hedy Lamarr from 1943 to 1947, one of several marriages for each. Their marriage is featured in the recent Irish play, Michael James Ford’s Hedy Lamarr and the Easter Rising (2006). While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners lightly worn and creased. LEW AYRES The actor poses in a suit and leans against a chair in this signed black and white photograph Inscribed photograph signed: “To La Verue -/ warmest greetings/ from Lew Ayres/ 1983/ Photo 1947″ in blue felt tip. A leading man through the 1940s, he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in Johnny Belinda (1948). He starred as Dr. Kildare in a series of feature films, but refused to play the role on television because cigarettes were to be advertised on the program. Misidentified as a conscientious objector because of his desire to serve as a combat medic, Ayers was temporarily blacklisted in Hollywood during World War II. He remained active in movie and television character roles through the 1980s, but never achieved the same level of popularity he had in the period just before WWII. Credits Ayres earned later in his career include Lime Street (1985) alongside Robert Wagner and guest appearances on Little House on the Prairie and Knots Landing (both in 1982).
