THEODOR LESCHETIZKY and JULIUS SCHULHOFF Each penned a lengthy musical quotation in Paris in 1864! Autograph Musical Quotation signed: Andante /[9 measures of music in both treble and bass clefs] / inscription in German, translated: for kind remembrance to Mr. Leschetizky/Paris 1864″, and on verso “Allegretto/ [16 measures of music for two instruments]/ Paris March 22 1864, 9½x6½. By age 18 he was a well-known virtuoso based in Vienna. He taught in Russia from 1862 to 1877, co-founding the St Petersburg Conservatory. He composed over 100 piano pieces, 2 operas, a piano concerto and 13 songs. In 1906 he made a dozen piano roll recordings, including 7 of his own compositions. His motto was, No art without life, no life without art. Encouraged by Chopin, he toured Europe to great acclaim. As a composer, Schulhoff is known for his piano solos, including a grand sonata, a 12 études, and various caprices, waltzes and mazurkas. Ink lightly bled through to verso.
