RAY McDONALD Youthful image in a sweater, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. Photograph inscribed and signed: “Saul/Good Luck/Your Friend/Ray McDonald”. Collector’s ink note on verso dates signature: 10-14-1943. His early films showed great promise, including his contribution to the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland Babes on Broadway (1941). Wartime service stalled his career. His last feature film was All Ashore (with Rooney and Dick Haymes, 1943), described by one critic as a poor man’s On the Town. Appearances on TV variety shows, including Ed Sullivan, seemed to promise a fresh start, but he choked to death on food in a New York hotel room at age 37. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. The/rooms, feature beautiful wall paper, artistic lamps, /and rare objects of art. The film was hugely successful, and MGM soon doubled her salary and began featuring her name on marquees. Unlike so many stars of the period, Crawford successfully made the transformation from the silents to the sound era, although she preferred the silents. Crawford, originally a professional dancer, had made her film debut in 1925. She won a Best Actress Academy Award for Mildred Pierce (1945) and was nominated for Best Actress Oscars for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). A tell-all memoir, Mommie Dearest (1978, later made into a feature film), by her daughter Christina, portrayed Crawford as unfeeling and ruthlessly ambitious.
