WARTIME DOCUMENT SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN. A Clear, Distinct Vellum Document Signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Wartime Document on Vellum; Signed by President Abraham Lincoln Feb. This beautiful and clear document records t. He commission of George Randolph Dyer, a Lincoln protégé and delegate to the state convention at Decatur, Illinois that nominated Mr. Lincoln on his first nomination for the Presidency. At the time of the Decatur Convention George Randolph Dyer was serving as the elected sheriff of Will County, Illinois, having moved from Chicago in 1841. He became a fervent abolitionist active in the underground railroad during the tumultuous 1850s before embracing Lincolns political aspirations. With established credentials, George Dyer (along with his brother, Charles) was slated among the delegates to the State Nominating Convention. Lincoln counted George and Charles Dyer among his legion of friends and that connection went back to at least the early 1850s. A report written by the Chairman of the Village of Plainfield Ill. Historic Preservation Commission in 2009 states: It is highly likely that he (Lincoln) did visit Plainfield on more than one occasion due to his close friendship with the members of the Dyer family of rural Plainfield. The old Dyer farmhouse still stood in 1998 and Lincoln may have been entertainedand quite possibly even slept in the house, according to an authority on local history and the Dyer family. A memorial for George Randolph Dyer published in October 1895 noted he was one of the first and most prominent members of the Republican party of Illinois, and so became a close friend of Lincoln, Lovejoy, Wentworth, and other leaders of the party in the state. The History of the Kimball Family (related by marriage) published in 1897 is laced with platitudes to George Dyer stating that He was one of the first and most active members of the Republican party, and although nearly alone, true to his freeborn instincts, he educated his neighbors to agree perfectly with Lincoln and Lovejoy, his personal friends, who he adorned, that slavery must be held in check at all hazards and at all costs, and must eventually be abolished. Another passage from Kimball reaffirms that, Lincoln, Lovejoy, and Long John Wentworth were his intimate friends, and it is said that he has about as many stories to tell as were told by Lincoln. During the Civil War, President Lincoln availed himself of the Dyers service. In 1862, George R. Dyer quickly secured a presidential appointment; his commission with the rank of Captain, offered here, being signed in Lincolns hand. A fan of aviation from the age of nine, Armstrong had his pilot’s license by the age of 16, and, after studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue for two years, went to Pensacola, Florida for Navy flight training. Serving in Korea at the age of 21, Armstrong flew 78 combat missions and won three Air Medals. For the seven years prior to his selection by NASA, Armstrong was a civilian pilot at Edwards Air Force Base, testing experimental aircraft and working as an engineer. Armstrong thrilled the world when he stepped off the ladder of the Lunar Excursion Module. Unusual vintage circa 1935 glossy 8 x 10 portrait of Babe Ruth in his Yankee pinstripes, boldly signed and inscribed in fountain pen, To Martha MacDonald, Sincerely, Babe Ruth. Also signed by two noted actors, “Hello Martha, Al Jolson” and “To Marthawith grand admiration for Babe Ruth, John Barrymore, ” and one vaudeville comedienne, Best, Polly Moran. Babe Ruth, John Barrymore, and Polly Moran appeared as guests on Al Jolson’s’Shell Chateau’ NBC radio show on April 27, 1935. A fantastic and interesting piece, especially given Barrymore’s endorsement of’The Babe. Ruth retired from baseball following the 1935 season and was inducted into Cooperstown, Baseball Gall of Fame the following year in 1936. Coincidentally on April 27, 1947 (exactly 12 years later to the day), Ruth was honored and spoke at Yankee Stadium on Babe Ruth Day. Ruth passed away the following year in 1948.
