Presumed first edition, Scribner, 1899, signed by Susan Glaspell. Dating to the era during which Glaspell was working as a journalist in Des Moines. She signed the front free endpaper in ink, Susie Keating Glaspell, / May 21, 1900, / Des Moines. ” In 1900 John Hossack was murdered; his wife’s subsequent trial for the crime, to which Glaspell was assigned by the Des Moines Daily News, was in many ways the making of Glaspell’s career, and she based her famous play “Trifles” and the short story, “A Jury of Her Peers, on that case. Amply illustrated, a handsome and well-made volume. Gilt lettering on cover; spine is darkened, with scuffs, rubbing and some cracking ends. A nice association copy. Items signed by Glaspell are scarce. NOT a former library book. Head edge gilt; fore-edge deckle. Else light soiling; some foxing to perimeters of frontispiece.
