Photograph inscribed and signed: “To Gladys Vilsack/Sincerely/Rudolph Valentino”. Valentino was the great romantic screen idol of the 1920s , the epitome of the Latin lover. Among his films, all silent, were T he Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse , The Sheik , Monsieur Beaucaire and The Son of the Sheik. Valentino was taken to a New York hospital with a perforated ulcer. His sudden death on August 23, 1926 at the age of 31 brought on a wave of mass hysteria among female fans. As with Elvis Presley a half century later, rumours persisted for years that he was not dead, but in hiding. Creased, especially at lower right, touching “tino” of signature.
