In the 1938 Broadway musical comedy, Knickerbocker Holiday, Huston, in the role of a 17th century New Amsterdam Governor, achieved theatrical immortality with his poignant rendition of the show’s top tune, “September Song”. Throughout the 1940s, he offered a gallery of memorable screen portrayals, from the diabolical Mr. Cohan’s father in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). Still, it was only after removing his expensive false teeth and trading his fancy duds for a dusty hobo’s outfit that the actor won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the cackling old prospector Howard in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), directed by his son, John Huston. IDA LUPINO and PAUL HENREID Promotional photo for the film Devotion , signed by both and inscribed by Lupino Photograph inscribed and signed: To Paul/ God Bless/You & Yours /Ida Lupino/Nov. Promotional photo for the film Devotion (1946), captioned in lower margin. In 1949, Not Wanted was the first of eight films she would direct. Continuing to act into the 1970s, she turned her directing skills almost exclusively to television productions such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, Have Gun Will Travel, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir , The Untouchables, The Fugitive and Bewitched. In all, she appeared in some fifty-nine films, directed eight, appeared in fifty-eight television shows and directed fifty others, earning her two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After 1940, when he moved to Hollywood and became a US citizen, Henreid began to get starring roles. These included Now Voyager (1942) and Of Human Bondage (1946), but his most famous role was that of resistance leader Viktor Lazslo, Humphrey Bogart’s rival for the affections of Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942). Henreid could also swashbuckle, as in Buccaneers (1950). From the 1950s onward, Henreid focused on directing films (Dead Ringer, 1964) and TV episodes (Alfred Hitchcock Presents). Devotion , completed in 1943 but not released until 1945, is praised for its acting performances but panned for playing fast and loose with history. Henreid played Reverend Arthur Nicholls, the object of a romantic rivalry between Emily Bronte (Lupino) and her sister Charlotte (played by Olivia de Haviland). Henreid’s memoir details the intense feuding on the set between Lupino and de Haviland. Alternate endings were even shot, with each sister winning him. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso.
