There are very few copies of the first printing autographed by Margaret Mitchell. The May 1936 printing was a smaller printing batch that actually released in June – so you will sometimes see a’first edition’ with a June 1936 date, or even’reprinted June 1936′. This limited printing of the May 1936 version is known as the official first printing. In a letter dated in February, 1937, Mitchell said she would no longer autograph her book, not even for relatives/friends. She died an untimely death when she was hit by a speeding vehicle in 1949.
